Building A Skincare Routine For The Summer
Summer is here, and we are all so ready for the time we’re going to be spending just enjoying the sunshine! Beaches and swimming, camping and hiking – so many wonderful things to do outdoors during the summer….but before we go, it will be smart to plan for the impact that all those hours in the sun will have on our skin. UV rays can accelerate some of the more common skin aging signs, such as wrinkles, age spots, and fine lines, in addition to those unexpected sunburns that can happen. Humidity and high temperatures can also affect our skin negatively, too, by increasing oil production. Building a great skincare routine that will properly care for your skin will help to alleviate many of these issues, giving you a beautiful summer look from the start of the season to its close. Here are some steps that should be part of building your summer skincare routine:
- Cleanse. When the weather is hot and humid, you may experience oily, shiny skin, and you will probably sweat more than is normal, too. Keeping your skin moisturized and with a matte finish at the same time will mean cleansing twice daily with a gel-based or foaming face wash. Beginning in the morning, wash all the oil and sweat away that can often build up overnight, and then, in the evening before bedtime, remove all makeup and cleanse your skin using your go-to face wash.
- Exfoliate. This step will keep your skin from looking dry and dull, even when it’s producing the excess oil we’ve been talking about. Regular exfoliation is an important step in your summer skincare routine because it will help you maintain a natural, glowing look to your skin. Using an exfoliating pad made with glycolic acid is best, due to its ability to dissolve away excess oil and dead skin cells on the surface of your skin that makes it look dull. Some of these pads are gentle enough to use every day, but it’s always a smart move to consult with your dermatologist before you add this kind of care to your skincare routine.
- Moisturize. Using a lightweight moisturizing formula will absorb quickly, which makes it a much better choice than those heavy day creams that have a tendency to mix with sweat and oil, creating buildup on your facial skin. Choose a daytime moisturizer with broad spectrum SPF protection, which will shield your skin from UVA and UVB rays.
- Self-Tanners. Consider using a self-tanner as a part of your summer skincare routine. A wash-off option means you won’t have to worry about that tan fading over time because you will be re-applying each day.
- Replenish. Your skin can be rejuvenated with a concentrated dose of hydration at night. A cream that is created with aloe water will do the trick nicely, due to the ability of this hydrating ingredient to add much-needed moisture to skin that has been exposed to long periods of sun. (It’s a great help for the occasional sunburn, too!)
