Keeping Your Skin Hydrated In Winter
During our winter months, it is hard to keep your skin hydrated. Your skin can feel parched and raw due to the frigid air and the biting winds. Moving indoors doesn’t help, either, since heaters are working hard in keeping our living environments warm and dry. It can sometimes seem almost impossible to manage!
No worries. We know some tricks you can use to keep your skin hydrated in winter:
Sunscreen
- Wait, what? Yes! Sunscreen prevents those UV rays from getting past your skin’s moisture barrier, so don’t neglect your daily SPF routine, even during winter.
Food and Drink
- Drink plenty of water and choose foods that are high in antioxidants as well as Omega3 fatty acids. Almonds, bananas, cherries, coffee, dark chocolate, and ginger tea are just a few of the food or drink items that can really help here.
Moisturizer
- We all know that moisture is the perfect solution for dryness, so make sure you use a moisturizer after you wash your skin; washing your skin strips it of the natural oils that it needs to protect itself.
Routine
- If your skin is really bothered by winter weather, simplify. Choose a good moisturizer and just wash it once a day to prevent excessive drying.
Humidity
- Using a humidifier can be a big help in replenishing your skin’s moisture in the heated air of your living and working spaces.
Temperature
- A hot bath or shower can be the best way to end a long, cold winter’s day, but hot water strips oils from your skin. Keep your water temperature mild and limit your showers to once a day to help with winter dryness.
Occlusives
- These are ingredients that are excellent for giving your skin a barrier to keep moisture in. Choose jojoba oil, cocoa butter, or shea butter, for some excellent results.
Scrubs
- Exfoliation is yet one more way to strip your skin of oils, so be sparing in your use of scrubs and exfoliants at this time of year.
